Born to Tivadar Soros, (1894-1968) a lawyer and Esperanto writer and Elizabeth, György Schwartz, later changed to George Soros is a world renown investor, author and philanthropist with a net worth of $ 25 billion (as at May 2017). The Schwartz family changed their name to Soros (Hungarian for successor or someone who will soar in Esperanto) as a way of hiding their German-Jewish ancestry in the face of a rise in anti-Semitism in Hungary. The family survived the Nazi German occupation of Hungary by purchasing government papers stating they were Christians. The Germans barred Jewish children from attending school during their occupation thus Soros spent time working as a waiter, railway porter and also accompanying an official of Hungary’s Ministry of agriculture in inventorying a wealthy Jewish family’s business. Before landing an entry level job at Singer and Friedlander, a merchant bank, Soros worked as a travelling salesman selling goods to souvenir shops and learn more about George Soros. He later moved to F.M Mayer as an arbitrage trade between 1956-1969 specializing in European stocks and later joined Wertheim and co as a European securities analyst before spending 10 years as the vice-president of Arnhold S.Bleichroeder before finally founding Soros Fund Management in 1970 which he later renamed to Quantum fund. Soros has five children born out of two marriages. He holds a bachelor of science in philosophy and a Masters in the same from London School of economics.
Open Society Foundation
Founded in 1993 by George Soros, the open source foundation is a grant-making network that supports civil society entities and groups around the world. The aim of the foundation is to advocate for justice promotion, public health, media freedom, governance among other human rights. Open source foundation is present in 37 countries, running both country and regional chapters in over 120 other countries, with its headquarters being in New York City, New York. So far the foundation has spent over $11 billion in pursuit of its various objectives around the world.
Profile of Philanthropy
Recently, it was revealed that George Soros has made a cumulative donation of $18 billion to the open source foundation, making it one of the largest private donor donation/wealth transfers to a foundation. Through the foundation, Soros has been able to help advocate for various causes both political human rights related, they include donations to defend the rights of Lesbians Gays BTQ, women rights, racial and ethnic discrimination, rights of religious minority groups etc. He has also contributed towards the promotion of reform in education, governance and justice. His contributions towards public health include donations towards creation of treatment centers during the Ebola outbreak in 2014, fighting of the HIV/AIDS epidemic, tuberculosis among others. He has also contributed towards the reformation in drug policies, helping in the decriminalization of having less than 28grams of marijuana in the state of Massachusetts, criminal justice and immigration policies.
